formata nel 1991 a Charlottesville, Virginia da Dave Matthews (voce e chitarra acustica), Leroi Moore
(sassofono), Stefan Lessard (basso), Boyd Tinsley (violino elettrico), Carter Beauford (batteria),
Peter Griesar (tastiere), che ha lasciato la band nel 1993.
